Medical Acupuncture

Good for: Relief of acute and chronic pain from musculoskeletal conditions

Cost: Optionally included within a medical massage session (no extra charge)

Medical acupuncture (also known as dry needling) is a natural and effective treatment for acute and chronic pain originating from musculoskeletal conditions. It is a Western development of traditional Chinese acupuncture, based on modern understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology.

A treatment involves fine needles being inserted through the skin and briefly left in position. The needles encourage localised muscular relaxation and the reduction of associated pain. This process is typically followed by massage and therapeutic stretching.

Dry needling is rarely used as a standalone procedure, but as part of a broader therapy approach encompassing touch, empathy, intention and awareness.

Medical acupuncture is commonly used to treat a range of painful conditions. It has proved effective for relief of conditions such as:

  • Chronic low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Knee pain caused by osteoarthritis
  • Tension headaches
  • Migraine
  • Temporomandibular Joint (jaw) pain
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Postoperative pain and nausea

You will need to have an initial assessment, followed by a course of treatment suitable for the condition. Typically this is between four to six sessions, but it can easily be less if the condition responds quickly.
